On Saturday 30.12. It went on towards Queenstown, the outdoor paradise of the South Island. We did not stay in place, it was packed, as many had come for the New Year celebration. Each accommodation was full, and the local campsite had been an escape-field (a rugby field) for camping tents available. Unbelievable how many people on such a Hype respond. The place was overflowing by young people, an even cooler than the other - the most important here is simple: "hang loose". Good that we had booked our accommodation before half a year in perspective is not wise, however, in this bursting from all Näter tourist destination, but about 40 more minutes in Cromwell. Cromwell is just the opposite of Queenstown: dull and dreary, a former gold mining town.
Nevertheless, we ran it take us, on 31 to go again to Queenstown for our international friends on the scenic mountain to hike and enjoy the beautiful view, because that has Queenstown: it lies on the edge of a huge, elongated lake and is surrounded by majestic mountains. Not for nothing is one of the mountains "The Remarkables".
The Swiss were staying in Wanaka, also a famous tourist destination, about 30 minutes from Cromwell. Wanaka is also a very large lake and the area is just beautiful there.
The South West on the South Island is dominated by large lakes and magnificent mountains. Now one might think that we have indeed in Austria. Well, here it is somehow different, especially the easy striking distance and solitude. To get through areas where you see 50 or 100 km a house. Here you are really in the wilderness.
New Year's Eve we spent playing cards in our accommodation, no fireworks, no champagne, just go to sleep. In Queenstown, the security forces this year, very content, they had to take in the celebrations but this year only 35 instead of 40 like last year in custody. At a campground in Wanaka according to newspaper has also been quite a rampage, we were glad that we lived in such a small town, where absolute zero was going on.
As we spent the remaining days: Twice we took a walk with our federal friends, one of them to a glacier near the same area. They were housed in so-called Lighthouse, a Christian home, the same as a church, Accommodation, living room, coffee is used. Just another fellowship. There is a large meeting room with coffee table in the corner of an open, well-equipped kitchen and in the worship area a synth and a drum. Next door is still a cozy living room and into the upper rooms, it has a few bunk beds. This is called something like a lodge. In the summer, not so much going on, the target group of the Lighthouse's mission are especially snowboarders and are abound in Wanaka in winter. Was certainly very impressive - cool!
it finds itself out under www.mammothlighthouse.com / Wanaka.
In Cromwell, we looked at once an old gold mining area - not quite barren New Zealander - More wild-west required.
On Thursday, 4.1. Next we went to Lake Tekapo, the last large lake. But of this the next time.
